Thoughts are energy: How to invite the ones that uplift you

Have you ever noticed how your thoughts sound very different when you’re tired compared to when you’re feeling energized and well-rested?
When we’re exhausted, hungry, or stressed, our brains tend to generate thoughts that are negative, self-critical, or destructive. They arrive quickly and take hold easily, because they require very little energy to appear. That’s why, late at night when you can’t sleep, your mind often starts replaying worries or worst-case scenarios.
But when your energy is high, after moving your body, enjoying nourishing food, resting well, or spending time with people who inspire you, your thoughts shift. They become more constructive, more expansive, and more positive. You start to see solutions, new possibilities, and even sparks of creativity.
The important thing to remember is this: we cannot always control which thoughts come into our minds. They often appear suddenly, like visitors knocking at the door. What we can choose is which ones we let in, which ones we believe, and which ones we give power to.
Thoughts are like dreams: I like to think of thoughts the way I think about dreams. You don’t choose what you dream at night, but you also don’t wake up and assume your dream was “true.” In the same way, not every thought you have deserves to be taken as reality. Some are simply passing clouds.
This shift in perspective is liberating: it helps us stop identifying with every thought and instead become more intentional about the ones we nurture.
Where do better thoughts come from?: The answer lies in energy. A well-fueled brain is capable of generating more helpful, constructive, and expansive thoughts. That’s why one of the best things you can do for your mindset is not to fight your thoughts directly, but to raise your energy first.
Here are five key sources of energy that directly influence the quality of your thinking:
Rest – Sleep is one of the most powerful ways to reset your mind. Notice how your perspective often shifts after a good night’s rest?
Nutrition – Food is fuel not just for your body, but for your brain. Nourishing meals give you clarity and stability.
Movement – Exercise, dancing, or even a walk outside quickly change your energy. Movement is one of the fastest ways to invite better thoughts.
Connection – The people and environments around you matter. Being with those who uplift you can instantly shift your inner dialogue.
Purpose – Even small goals that feel meaningful give your brain a sense of authorship over your life, which strengthens constructive thinking.
A gentle reminder: The next time you find yourself caught in a spiral of negativity, pause and ask yourself: What is my energy like right now?
Instead of battling your thoughts, turn your attention to restoring your energy. Take a walk, eat something nourishing, call a friend, or allow yourself to rest. Very often, your thoughts about the same situation will look completely different once your energy shifts.
Because in the end, thoughts are energy, and the more you care for your energy, the more you’ll invite thoughts that help you live the life you truly want.
